!±8± How to Choose the Right Garmin Forerunner Wrist GPS

The Garmin Forerunner line includes GPS sports watches and training devices for athletes of all fitness and activity levels. But how do you pick the right one for you? This article provides tips and information on several models to help you pick one to suit your needs without paying for more than you need.

This article covers the following Garmin Forerunner products:

205 210 305 310XT 405 405CX 410

All of these models include a GPS receiver and are water resistant.

Sports Watch vs Training Device

The term "sports watch" is typically reserved for the 210, 410, 405, and 405CX, meaning that they can also be used as regular watches. The 205, 305, and 310XT are "training devices", and include only the personal training functions, without normal time keeping.

Available Features

Heart Rate Monitor (all but the 205): The actual heart rate monitor is a strap that you wear. It communicates with the Forerunner. The strap is included with some models, otherwise must be purchased separately. Virtual Partner (all but the 210): You can set up a virtual partner to compete with you as you run while using the timer. This helps motivate you to perform even better. Courses (all but the 210): You can record a run and then use that as a course to follow on a future run. This way you can track your progress. Routes (205 and 305 only): The Routes feature lets you store in memory any location. Then, you can combine locations to create a route that you can use in your next workout. Wireless transfer and Autosync (310XT, 410, 405, 405CX): Transfer data to nearby runners, or from your computer to your device. Automatically Upload your data to the Garmin Connect website for free data analysis and sharing. Calorie Counter (410,405CX): Tracks the number of calories burned during your workout.

Suggestions Based on Activity

If your primary activity is walking, then the 210 sports watch, or the 205 or 305 training devices are good choices.

If you will be using the GPS while running, then consider the 210, 410, 405, or 405CX sports watches, or the 305 or 310XT training devices.

If your training includes running, biking, and swimming, then take a look at the 205, 305, or 310XT training devices.
